Pinning the blame on #GlacierBurst masks real issues. The Himalayas are being made fragile & brittle with rampant construction of #dams, #roads & tourism projects which rarely benefit locals whose lives & livelihoods are being washed away with the #floods #UttarakhandDisaster
There is enough writing on how the Himalayas have been made increasingly fragile with "bumper to bumper" dams. The political economy that drives such mode of "development" doesn't care. #ClimateCrisis is comeuppance for such political hubris, the price of which is paid by the poor
And of course, just like the horrid 2013 #UttarakhandFloods which killed 6000 people, all fingers will point to GLOF & #ClimateChange. If there is one thing we have succeeded in India is in our efforts to "naturalise" floods. Too much rain, too little snowfall, etc etc.
We need an interdisciplinary forensic assessment. Of course #climatechange is playing a massive role, but so is irreverence to the Himalayas - sand mining on river beds, endless dams, encroachment of floodplains, road projects that pay scant respect to geohydrological regimes.
The easy play is to settle with the GLOF narrative. Dig a little deeper. See what is happening with Himalaya ecology & the steady march of infrastructure projects. Read some excellent reportage on this in @scroll_in. https://scroll.in/article/972616/special-report-modi-governments-highway-project-in-himalayas-is-built-on-lies-and-legal-violations
To explain to the current dispensation the only way possible - #Climatechange is nature's Rudra Tandava, an expression of grief & rage against arrogance & hubris. There is only one to appease the Gods. Stop bothering their abode.
