I was speaking to an elderly friend one time when he jokingly told me about one of his experiences in the hospital. "I told the doctor that my pee isn't coming out smoothly and he went on to stick his finger in my ass" He laughed. I laughed. We moved on.

Sometime later I thought what if he actually doesnt understand the concept of digital rectal examination. So I decided to make this thread explaining what DRE is and its clinical significance
As the name implies, DRE is a component of physical examination that involves the use of the digits (fingers) to inspect the rectal area.
A lot can be concluded with DRE, it could also give your doctor a guide as to what's going on and what extra tests might be needed from you.
Some particularly important things that could be diagnosed through this method includes colorectal bleeding, which could be an early sign of cancer or a hemorrhoid.
It can also be used to relieve some causes of severe constipation.

Along with the normal gynecological exam, it can be used to check the condition of the uterus and could help your doctor diagnose conditions like fibroids and uterine cancer.
Another one, which is specific to the males, is the early diagnosis of a prostate problem which include a benign (harmless) mass or a cancer. Both potentially presenting as a problem with peeing as explained in this picture

You do not necessarily need any type of preparation before a DRE. But you certainly will need to provide consent because this is a somewhat uncomfortable procedure for both parties.
Remember that early diagnosis could potentially save you from the terrible effects of these disease
