Long-term frost
is expected and the whole of the Netherlands
is going a little crazy. There is only one question we all ask eachother right now:
Will there be an #Elfstedentocht icescating tour?
A thread about a very special Dutch tradition: (1)

The #Elfstedentocht is a 200 kilometer long skating trip on natural ice along eleven cities in the province of Friesland. The tour was ridden for the first time in 1909, is held no more than once per winter and can only be organized if the ice conditions allow it (2)

The tour was held 15 times so far, the last time in 1997 and takes the participants to the eleven places in Friesland that once obtained city rights. These are Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker and Dokkum (3)

It has now been 24 years since the last tour was held. As soon as it starts to freeze even slightly, all the Dutch people hope that there will be another trip. #Elfstedentocht newsreels on tv, ice masters who report the last thickness of the ice, we all go a little crazy (4)

Iceskating champions who will hand in Olympic medals for winning this tour. If you win the #Elfstedentocht, like farmer Evert van Benthem, winner in 1985 and 1986, you will be a legend in the Netherlands. We call it 'de tocht der tochten', the mother of all skating tours (5)

Even our King Willem-Alexander rode the tour in 1986, at the age of 18. Everyone is passionately cheered on by hundreds of thousands of spectators throughout the ride. If you finish in time, you will receive the highly sought after Eleven Cities cross (6)

Legends were born, reputations were broken. Skaters with frozen beards, fingers and toes. Crying winners and losers, the Elfstedentocht has it all. And it will continue to freeze considerably for the next days .... Thank you for reading, liking and retweeting this thread (7)

Even if the ice is thick enough next week and fit for the #Elfstedentocht then we still have #covid19. Will the @gietitaloan committee have a #Coronaproof script and will the @MinPres at least approve the competition run of the tour?
