Ja'Marr Chase, WR, LSU - 6'0" 208 lbs
Chase has a strong case to be the WR1 in this class. While on the same team, he outperformed everyone's new hotness Justin Jefferson when JJ was a junior and Chase was a sophomore. Let's dive in.

Ja'Marr opted out, but the stats from 2019 are just... stupid.
84 receptions, 1780 yards (21.2 YPC), 20 TDs.

Stupid high production. Prototypical size. Let's do some film.
Starting with 2019 vs Mississippi. The reason why it's been 10 minutes is because we're into the second quarter and he doesn't have a reception yet... honestly his releases off the line so far don't look great.
They finally say "enough of this" and design a play to get it into his hands. He tries to work all the way across the field and it doesn't work.

He looks nonchalant on the line like... every snap. I'm still figuring out if I like that or not.
Something I'm going to keep an eye on - when the DB is in press, it looks like Chase is more interested in throwing punches than running routes. It worked on this one to get his outside leverage on a quick route, but worth noting.
Chase has the inside leverage with no defensive help, so I'm not sure why Burrow threw this one high, but that's a pretty catch to climb the ladder and go get it.
He doesn't line up over his toes. He's always in this really relaxed stance, and it takes him a long time to get off the line. He does this little crouch and go thing. I don't like that. Meanwhile, look at the releases for the two WRs at the bottom of the screen. Much quicker.
Once he gets the ball, suddenly he runs with a ton of effort and physicality. I wish I saw that in his routes.
And, that's all from that game. Huh. Mk. Let's watch 2019 vs Alabama.
Well-coached, but that's straight up a pick route. lol.
Chase's best attribute, in my opinion, is his ball skills in the air. He's very good at adjusting and has great body control.
That's Trevon Diggs that Chase got in a boxing match with.
I really like his physicality after the catch. That's awesome.
I'm going to keep going on Chase a bit tomorrow. Need some sleep.
Okay, going to 2019 vs Utah State. First rep and... woof.
This looks very... lackadaisical. Run, dude.
He's practically walking. What the hell is going on? He's not running a route, he's not clearing out, and he's not blocking, so... what is he doing?
...
Okay, signs of life. This is a pretty decent route and like always, he's explosive after the catch. He is very hard to tackle.
Here's an easy go route. It looks to me like the corner is completely lost on the play. Never locates the ball. Nothing spectacular here but he high points it well and shows good body control.
Burrow really should have known better than to think Chase would actually BREAK out of a route.
You know who keeps working across the field when his QB scrambles, shows great effort, and calls for the ball on this play?

Justin Jefferson.
I'm going to ask this as politely as I know how - what in the actual fuck was that?
