A lot (though not enough) gets made of AFLW athletes working other jobs while also playing the game at the highest level. It’s worth noting that MOST of the women calling, reporting on, podcasting, writing about AFLW are also working other jobs & are paid little if anything.
These are women working for free, in their spare time to provide QUALITY coverage. Even a 5 min spot on the radio takes know how, research and watching games. These women are leant on for their expertise and unique understanding of women’s football; the community and the game.
Major media outlets cover women’s footy using their insights, work and IP often, with personalities and journalists on the pay roll getting the by lines and the bigger pay cheques. Picture the kind of coverage AFLW would have if these women didn’t do the work?
Imagine what they could do if they were HIRED and therefore had more time to research, extend themselves and be innovative in the space? Women’s footy is held up off the backs of women working for free. Everywhere.
