Montana needs to have a serious, practical conversation about a sales tax but absolutely no one on either side of the aisle wants to have it.
I get it. It’s uncomfortable and as a Dem I used to be solidly against. Then I learned a couple things. https://twitter.com/davidmweissman/status/1358193547653111811

Montana is a tourism state. We get 12-13 million visitors a year and the 1 million of us who live here pay for all the roads, police, water treatment, and bridges they use. Largely via property taxes.
The taxes on our homes are so high b/c we are ludicrously good hosts.

Sales taxes while regressive can be designed very progressively. The goal is not to tax Montanans daily needs: food, diapers, basic clothing etc. The state can draw that line wherever we want.
We can also mandate a MT income tax credit to off-set costs for in-state residents.

I’m not advocating either way. I’m saying this is a conversation all Montanans NEED to have. Upset about property taxes and don’t want cities to drop firefighters? The answer lies in either sales tax, or dramatically increasing income tax.
We need to be talking about this.
