THE POWER OF NOSTALGIA IN MUSIC.
Life moves in stages and once you pass a stage, there’s no going back. The life you lived when going to college is a completely different experience from the life you lived in high school. (CONT.)
Music acts as the sound track to each of these different stages and that’s why it’s the closest thing we have to reliving these memories. It’s just human nature to live in the past or fantasize about the future while completely ignoring the present.
This is exactly why you may have noticed that songs that were overplayed on the radio, which you may have hated in the past are now some of the best songs you’ve ever heard. I couldn’t stand “Rather Be” before but if that song goes on now, I’m going crazy.
Nostalgia can also make songs and albums that you loved in the past, infinitely better. Albums like “Birds in the Trap Sing Mcknight,” and “Damn.” were so good at the the time of release but now they take me back to simpler times and have become even more enjoyable for me.
Artists need to capitalize off nostalgia. and turn their album releases into world events. “TLOP” and “Astroworld” are good examples of this. If I asked you where you were, and who you were with when these albums dropped, I know y’all would have the answers with every last detail
On the other hand, nostalgia can also negatively effect music for you. This is seen with old heads, and our resistance against artists evolving. We believe that their past work can’t be topped and so we stay stuck on these “better times,” til the now becomes the new better times.
2016 is a true measure of how powerful nostalgia is in music. With arguably some of the best music of the decade, we all have this distorted memory of 2016. It’s seen as an all time great year that we always look back on, yet in truth, it really was just another year.
In conclusion, music is the soundtrack to all of the many stages in our lives and it’s in this nostalgia and memories that make it so powerful. Artists should capitalize off this nostalgic power and create moments for their fans and themselves to time travel to, through music.
