I have a thought (or two) for any artists out there who might be struggling with a lack of sales, exacerbated by seeing others have life-changing mega-sales .. I’ve said this before so forgive the repetition, but this is based on my experience (13 years) in commercial art:
The only thing you can control is your art .. markets aren’t your concern.. collectors aren’t your concern .. other artist sales aren’t your concern.. making your best work & looking after yourself are
I’ve been through all of this before - just swap ‘sales’ with ‘commissions’ and it is exactly the same.. & I went through dark times, wondering why it wasn’t happening for me & whether it ever would.. eventually I learned that all I could do was make my best work
Outside of the work you need to mind yourself.. get away from the f%#*ing computer - go for a walk, watch some anime, read a book, stare out a window .. get some fresh air in your face & fresh perspective in your head
Then you work to get those cool ideas out of your head and maybe learn some new skills while you do it.. but the point is the only way to feel content is in making your best art .. there is none in worrying about people liking it & none in comparing yourself to others
The only thing that matters is you making work you love & minding yourself while you do it
Your good work will open doors for you .. keep it lit
PS this is still, 13 years later, what I need to remind myself of - daily
