The central disagreement in the abortion debate is whether fetuses are humans worthy of human rights. (1/5)
Pro-choicers agree that all humans equally deserve rights, & a majority agree that the right to life is more important than the right to liberty. But most of them don't agree that fetuses are biological humans from fertilization. (See Table 4.1 - https://knowledge.uchicago.edu/record/1883?ln=en) (2/5)
Pro-lifers agree that bodily rights are important and that women and men should have equal rights, but most of us DO recognize fetuses as biological humans from fertilization--and we believe they are worthy of human rights (3/5)
Most abortion debates I witness involve PCers assuming the premise that fetuses are morally irrelevant (or near enough) & PLers assuming the premise that fetuses are morally equivalent to newborns. These convos don't usually get very far. (4/5)
Our two sides may not be able to come to an agreement on when & why human life is valuable, but we should try to at least understand that is where our disagreement almost always lies. Most other issues are secondary to that question. (5/5)
