National politics tends to bring out the nasty in people. Power is an addictive drug.

To ensure power is gained or maintained by a minority interest group, several political tactics are used to “gaslight” or confuse the electorate.

This is demagogic populism.
Canadians are naive to many of these tactics, having been accustomed to generally straight forward politics of the past 150 years.

But many Canadian politicians have rightfully earned their reputations for dishonesty and slick behaviour.
But we must remember not all politicians use such underhanded tactics. The problem is, a plethora of politicians are using them right now in contemporary politics.

What it means is one must do their homework and discern affiliations before trusting political opinions.
So what does gaslighting mean?

Here’s a broad definition (screen shot). Basically it’s a technique to get you to doubt your powers of observation and to distrust your own assessment.

Countless trumped up accusations and scandals keep being thrown into the political milieux to confuse and erode trust in the government and democratic institutions.

Recently, Americans have experienced a treasonous attempt to overthrow the newly elected president before he took office.

The globe is still stunned by the wild & “untethered to reality” conspiracy theories that contributed to the violent insurrection in the US.
Recent court filings reveal a Canadian connection to the gaslighting and establishment of outrageous conspiracy theories used to control those vulnerable to magical thinking. The Rebel News is certainly in a shitload of hot water. And rightfully so.
Those efforts have also been made in Canada. Along with many other attempts to muddy truth and obscure facts.

Relentless fake scandals are offered almost weekly and milked for all they’re worth to shift the opinions of voters who chose the Liberals as government.
But it’s not just the far right. It’s both ends of the political spectrum who participate in political subterfuge activities.

One of those activities is entryism, also known as infiltration. Used by opposition for generations.

Canadians are mostly oblivious to its existence.

Most Canadians are honest and truthful and take politicians at face value. It’s one of our collective peculiarities having never been attacked or invaded in our national history (well, besides 1812 ~ but that was British governance attacked by Manifest Destiny Americans).
We just don’t believe people are that dishonest and deceitful. Why? Because the majority of us are liberal and believe people are mostly good.

Most of the time that’s true. But it is NOT true in adversarial politics. Which, unfortunately, is contemporary politics in Canada.
At all levels of government. Municipal, provincial and federal. All have been invaded by populist demagoguery and are rampantly overrun by gaslighting.

This makes the discernment of facts & truth quite difficult at times.

Now is NOT the time to blindly trust partisan opinion.

While our society, political model and electoral model differ from the US, there has been much crossover in political influence and importation of dirty politics from both the US and UK.

Canadians need to be wary of any partisan opinions and where they might originate.
We need to familiarize ourselves with the tactics of those who are desperate to gain power.

Canada is one of the last bastions of full democracy. We owe it to the globe to stay that way while the US cleans house.

And we owe it to our children and grandchildren to protect their birthright of democracy, as our forebears protected ours.

In WW2 men and women went elsewhere to fight tyranny and evil. Present day tyranny has invaded the Canadian zeitgeist through network media.
There is no ability to trust without proof and verification anymore. One look reveals the “Liberal” criticizing PMJT has worked with a known far right apologist before.

We must step up our pursuit of truth and reliance on verifiable facts.

Because the left and right have mightily increased their efforts to smear the government who has managed the devastating global pandemic fairly competently so far.

The world is full of good people.
But there are a number of kooks, bad actors and malignant narcissists running amok as well. A few of them in Canada.

Be extra careful you know the difference between integrity and duplicity. It’s getting harder and harder to do so, but it can be done.
