I know this is hard for some people but police lock ups, jails and prisons are all different things.
Police lock ups are where people are held after being arrested, these people haven't been charged and in some cases won't be at all.
Jails are where people are caged after they've been charged & where they'll await trial.
A charge is not a conviction. Many charges will be greatly reduced or thrown out all together. Most people locked up pretrial are there only because they can't afford a bomd.

Many convictions are wrongful, many people are overcharged and most importantly caging someone only creates more harm and does nothing to address any harm they may have been caused.
