FOREVER MEMPHIS: A THREAD.

There are sooooo many places in Memphis that hold so many memories for people here. A lot of those places are gone now but I'll try to take yall down Memory Lane.
Mrs. Winners:
While this restaurant wasn't specific only to Memphis, it was a favorite here. They were always packed! Unfortunately they closed all of their locations and we are STILL sad. Bruh I want a chicken fried steak so baaaad.
Bojangle's:

A lot of my followers are too young to remember Bojangles ever being here but they were and they left in the early 80s. Fortunately, a new location has opened just across the state line in Olive Branch.
Central Park:

Look......LOOK. Central Park was THE TRUTH!!!! Quarter pound cheeseburgers were $1.33!!!! And they had the seasoned fries!!!! I miss them for real....
Thornton the Donut King:

Thorntons was located on Lamar and was the ORIGINAL spot for hot doughnuts in Memphis. I remember VIVIDLY the doughnuts floating in the grease and being DRENCHED in the glaze. It was sad to see them close.
Bradley's/Tyler's: In Orange Mound there was Bradley's Hot Dogs & when she closed she gave the recipe for her famous slaw to Tyler Glover, the mayor of Orange Mound. Mr. Tyler retired from the business. Those were some of the best hot dogs EVER. Mr. Tyler passed away in 2020.😥
The International House of Pancakes:
In Downtown Memphis we used to have the original IHOP. The pancakes were out of this world. It sat vacant forever and was eventually torn down to make a parking lot for the VA hospital.
The Mall of Memphis:

Every weekend THIS WAS THE SPOT. Who didn't walk the mall all day? And you already know you was trying to get the number RIGHT BY THE ICE RINK. RIP to the Mall of Memphis.
Just For Feet:
Right beside the Mall of Memphis was the greatest shoe store of all time AND IT WASN'T THE SHOES!!! They had a full half court inside and you could get a run in that lasted all day. That's why they went out of business! Wasn't nobody buying shoes!!!
Hickory Ridge Mall:

Hickory Ridge Mall had a double decker carousel and opened soon after the Mall of Memphis. Everybody kind of migrated there until Wolfchase opened. Then it was hit by a tornado and never recovered once the anchor stores closed.
Southbrook Mall:

The Southbrook Cinema 7 was the theatre to go to. You would see a movie, go to the bathroom and then WALK IN ANOTHER MOVIE. Plus you could buy all the bootleg Gucci & Louis you heart desired. And you had to hit the arcade too!
Raleigh Springs Mall:

This mall used to have ALL the shops and outlasted all of the previous malls I've listed. They tore it down and now they have built a Towne Center. They really used to have a club in that mall. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Libertyland:

We all knew it as Three Flags over Orange Mound! 🤣 They had 24 rides but the 2 best were the Himalayan and the Zippin Pippin. Everybody knew the last car would jump the track in the curves and pop back in. It was DANGEROUS FUN!!!!
The Enchanted Shoe:

Some of you have passed by this spot and never knew what it was but it was a children's shoe store that sold everything from hard bottoms on up. They eventually tore it down after it closed and built a MLGW location.
X-Site on American Way:

It was an indoor amusement park where parents would literally drop their kids off and stay ALL DAY. Rides, arcade and food. It closed and is now Suits U Mens Fashion.
Celebration Station:

When they opened up it was like Putt Putt on steroids! All of the games, bumper boats, go kart tracks, YOU NAME IT! It has since closed and is now a landscaping business.
Al's Golfhaven:

This spot in Whitehaven was LEGENDARY. It was Top Golf with go karts! 🤣 The cheeseburgers were IMMACULATE! The city of Memphis bought the land and built an elementary school.
Malibu Grand Prix:

Only older people will remember this spot. It had multiple tracks and you had to move up from track to track to get up to earning a license to drive the 1/4 scale Indy cars. It was an EXPERIENCE.
Adventure River/Wild Water:

Two names, one location. What do I really need to say? If you ever got an opportunity to go here then you know you never wanted to leave! Shout out to @howardkew for throwing the LIVEST POOL PARTY IN THE HISTORY OF MEMPHIS!!!
Denim & Diamonds:

Every. Sunday. Night.
Y'all already know. 5500 people in the club. The Hilfiger Dancers. Howard Q. Devin Steel. Spydermann. 2 Smooth. Hypo on the Mic. There will never be another.
380 Beale/24 Karat/Plush/Crave:

This club has had plenty of names and even had a dance show! It's too many memories to try to name from this building but I'm sure some of you will have some to name! Shout out to Moody Inc and The White House.
The Premier/Level II:

Master P filmed a video there. Lil Jon performed there. You knew where everyone would be on a Saturday night in Memphis. Imma let y'all post yall memories cause I know y'all got em!
The Mid South Coliseum:

Monday night wrestling. The Fresh Fest. The Monster Truck Jam. Memphis State Tigers Basketball. The building was closed due to non usage. It is now a storage facility. It deserves so much better....
The Great Pyramid of Memphis:

Built to be the Tomb of Doom for the University of Memphis Tigers, it was one of the greatest arenas in the south. Once we got the Grizzlies, they opened FedEx Forum. The Pyramid was sold to Bass Pro Shops. Trust me, that thang is DOPE!
Bowling Lanes:

Depending on which side of town you stayed on you either went to Imperial, Winchester or Cherokee. They are all long gone now. Winchester closed last and the building still stands.
The Crystal Palace/Dave"s Skating Rink: I really don't have to say much about the Crystal Palace. Y'all know exactly how much fun it was but right down the street? You had Dave"s skating rink. It was the premier rink until the Palace open. Dave's is now a flea market.
Whataburger: most of my followers are too young to know the Memphis had 3 Whataburger locations. The only building that is still standing is in Frayser and is now a fish restaurant.
Pop Tunes: Poplar Tunes was one of Memphis' oldest record stores. If you wanted music, chances are you went to one of the many locations around the city to get your cassette, record or CD. Music went digital and signaled the end for them.
Boss Ugly Bob's: One of the few Black Owned record shops in Memphis. Catered to all, but focused mainly on R&B and Soul. It was a staple for aspiring DJs. Sadly, a fire destroyed part of the building and they never reopened.
South Side High: If you grew up around Norris and Mallory you probably attended South Side. I used to visit my aunt who taught English there. They were known as The Scrappers and the mascot was a bulldog. It's closed now but the memories live on.
The House on Memdenhall: I don't know the story behind the person who designed this house but EVERYONE IN MEMPHIS HAS SEEN IT. I have heard that the small mound on the left was built so that the height of the house was measured from the top of the mound to fit the guidelines. 😭
The Budda on Mendenhall: (Please excuse the typo in the previous tweet) If you're headed south on Mendenhall after passing "The House" you will see THE BUDDA. I remember when the owner built it, people were parking in the turning lane, jump out, rub the Budda & hit the casino! 🤣
The Statue of Liberation: If you've ever been to Hickory Hill then you know what's up. As a tribute to religion and the liberation of people's minds, World Overcomers Church built a Statue of "Liberation" based off of the Statue of Liberty.
Foote Homes/The Projects:

All of the projects in Memphis were demolished. Most of them are underdeveloped land. The Foote Homes were actually revamped to include multi level income families. It's now called Foote Park at South City.
4069 Lamar. Club No Name. The Expo. Envy. Cactus Jack's. One building. Many names. Plenty of parties here. Plenty of WILD NIGHTS in this building. Plenty of calls to the police made. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Legendary.
Ike's: Who remembers Ike's???? The only way to describe it is that it was bigger than Walgreens but smaller than a Target but had EVERYTHING YOU NEEDED including *some* foods in the refrigerated section. Ike's was DOPE.
Peabody Main: As a child I used to go to Peabody also called Peabody Main or the main library. Now if you put THE in front of it, that's the hotel. On Saturdays they did readings in the kids' library. Peabody Main was demolished. The New Main library is on Poplar. (pictured)
Fred's Discount Store: Memphis based and much like Walgreens Drug Store. Fred's was a great place to shop and you didn't have to worry about crazy lines like other stores. Unfortunately Fred's went out of business in 2019.
Greg's Men's Clothing Store. The commercial speaks for itself....
I hope y'all have enjoyed these tweets down memory lane. I've been posting for three hours straight working on this thread so it's only right I end it with BERT'S!!! Y'all know Bert's would KEEP YOU FRESHER DENNA MUG!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
