WHY LOCAL MEDIA MATTERS & NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT- a thread

Recently, we’ve watched as massive layoffs have swept Canadian media. They’ve affected almost every company & every medium: from print, to tv, to newspaper. As someone in media, it is deeply upsetting to see your...
...talented hardworking friends, coworkers, & respected broadcasters get let go. AND, to know that WHEN they are let go-there may not be another job out there for them.

If local media disappears-knowledge & information about WHAT goes on in our local communities disappears too.
From highlighting good people in our community to uncovering flaws and truths with investigative journalism- it’s why local media matters. Local Media can provide insight, information and push for accountability from local governments, companies, and services.
The less people working to generate these stories, the less local coverage we will see. City Flooding? Local media fills you in. City council scandal? Local media investigates. Story about guy mowing his lawn in a tornado? Local media shares these gems in your community.
The thing is- DEMAND for local media IS there. Often these stories in your community will get 1000s of likes & shares on a local radio, tv or newspaper’s page. People ARE interested. But it’s proved difficult to monetize & provide new stable revenue streams from online audiences.
So what is the answer to help local media?

I don’t know. Is there merit to what Australia is doing potentially requiring internet companies like Facebook & Google to compensate local media for journalism? Not sure- but it is something governments and the CRTC should look into.
But what can YOU do to help?

#SUPPORTLocalMedia in your community. Here’s how:

-Remember that local media folk aren’t just “talking heads for a corporation”. A lot of these people LIVE in your community and CARE about what’s going on in your community too.
-Consider following/liking/sharing the local media stations/personalities/journalists in your community online. (Even your local bloggers too!) Visit THEIR websites!

-If you like local stories- consider paying to subscribe to a local paper online.
-Considering advertising with your local media too- they are organizations in YOUR community-speaking TO your community, that CARE about your community.

-Lastly, contact your federal government officials and tell them why local media matters to you.
And finally?

Remember that we’re ALL in this together- and this IS an issue that affects ALL of us.

To my local media friends? Stay strong 👊🏻👊🏿👊🏽 love you guys.
Also-wanted to add that this INCLUDES all the fantastic people in local media working hard BEHIND the scenes too.

(Promotions teams, radio/tv engineers, camera people, IT, creative teams, producers, managers... I could go on & on)!!! But YOU guys are rock stars & hit hard too.
