I see statements like this every day on Twitter and I still have no idea what they actually mean. The overwhelming majority of homes are bought by people who live in them, and those people are making a speculative investment. Is the idea to ban people from buying homes?
If we're not gonna ban regular people from buying homes then the market is still going to be oriented around speculative investment. And we shouldn't ban regular people from buying homes, so... ???
I guess I want to know what "decommodify housing" means for someone who owns their home. I don't understand how this happens without tanking their home value or appropriating their homes, and it's really hard for me to see how we build a winning political coalition around that.
If it actually just means "don't build housing for profit," then so be it. I think that's bad and it wouldn't decommodify any of the housing that already exists, but it would be a lot more clear at least.
I like this response. I just don't know what it means to act on this, and particularly how you do so without causing even more harm and enriching property owners even further.
