We’re reading some troubling hot takes from white liberal scholars regarding unrest in the StLouis jail. #crimtwitter
Their Twitter “commentary” calls for compassion on behalf of people incarcerated at the jail bc they have not been convicted of a crime. Two problems with this:
1. Jails incarcerate people who have been convicted of crimes (& who usually are serving sentences of less than 3 years). Jails also, of course, incarcerate people who have not been convicted & are awaiting trial.
2. Urging compassion for people who have not been convicted implies that those who have been convicted are somehow not equally deserving of compassion & humane treatment. This type of thinking PERPETUATES #massincarceration.
What is happening in St. Louis jail reflects inhumane conditions that have been exacerbated during the pandemic. The suffering of everyone who is subject to these conditions deserves our empathy, our intervention, and our compassion.
