An imam and a priest are not the same thing. Any man can be called an imam if they lead the prayer. A woman can also lead the prayer. There are women imams in the UK, they’ve been around for a very long time. We need to see much better religious literacy across our media. https://twitter.com/bbcwomanshour/status/1357974310527270913
@ZaraM01’s appointment is historic and very significant. Zara is the first woman to lead the @MuslimCouncil and has a vision to create greater inclusivity. Muslim women face 360 degrees of patriarchy and misogyny from within our so called communities and from outside too.
It’s Muslim women who are pushing for equality inside our community and faith spaces. I believe Zara’s appointment is in part a result of this. Powerful and progressive wok is being carried out despite reinforced concrete crlings Muslim women face daily in all aspects of life.
The fact of the matter is there are too many faith based spaces where women are not welcome and are treated as less than equal. There are too many mosque committees that have never had a woman representative on the committee, and too many mosques where women are not welcome.
This @BBCWomansHour discussion could have focused on all of this and more alongside acknowledging that Zara and @MuslimCouncil are addressing these issues as are Muslims across communities. Instead this interview got stuck on a point that it didn’t move on from. What a waste.
