thinking about trans woman jimin who comes into her trans identity in her early thirties, years after she marries the love of her life, taehyung.
taehyung knows that seeing herself in their old wedding photos wearing her tailored suit and with her shortly cropped hair can be a sore spot for jimin, so he decides to plan a surprise vow renewal ceremony and recruits all their mutual friends to help.
yoongi is in charge of decorating their venue. seokjin is tasked with discreetly inviting all their close friends and family without raising any suspicions. hoseok is assigned to pick out a dress for jimin to wear, though taehyung has to approve of it before hoseok buys it.
jungkook will be doing jimin's makeup and also taking photos at the actual event, and namjoon will be in charge of staging this entire vacation that they will be using to mask their secret vow renewal ceremony.
jimin thinks taehyung is taking her back to daegu to show her his childhood home and the farm he spent most of his youth growing up on, but taehyung has planned something so much grander.
the group of them decides to make a road trip out of it, and they separate themselves into three cars.
"we're just stopping in daegu to spend a couple days and then we'll continue south," is what taehyung tells jimin.
"we're just stopping in daegu to spend a couple days and then we'll continue south," is what taehyung tells jimin.
jimin doesn't question it. she's just glad she gets time away from her busy job and time to spend with her handsome husband of seven years instead.
taehyung drives down to daegu with one hand on the steering wheel and the other wrapped around jimin's small hand on top of the console. they hum along to the radio together, jimin's voice sweet and high and taehyung's voice low and smooth.
jimin and taehyung spend their first day in daegu visiting taehyung's parents.
when they meet up with the rest of their friends for dinner later that night, hoseok tells jimin that he saw something she might like when he was window shopping today.
when they meet up with the rest of their friends for dinner later that night, hoseok tells jimin that he saw something she might like when he was window shopping today.
"it looked like something you'd wear," he reasons. "you should wear it tomorrow when we visit taehyung's cousins.
the farm that used to belong to taehyung's grandparents has since been inherited by taehyung's older cousin and his wife, so tomorrow they'll be visiting in the early afternoon.
jimin frowns as hoseok describes the dress. "i'm sure i'll love the dress, but you said it was white? i'm not sure if i should be wearing white on a farm, oppa."
hoseok's expression turns frazzled. terrified he might blurt out something he shouldn't, taehyung speaks up and very calmly tells her, "it hasn't rained in over a week. the ground won't be too muddy, so you don't have to worry. i'm sure you'll look beautiful in white."
jimin seems to glow from the inside out. "okay, taehyungie," she says, quiet and bashful. "i will wear it for you."
"you're coming to meet taehyung's cousins too?" jimin asks the next morning as she brushes her long black hair in the mirror.
jungkook is sitting outside of the bathroom on the hotel bed with hoseok sprawled out behind him.

"yes," jungkook tells her. "i think he wants to show us the farm as well. we've never been."
"that's right," jimin says with a nod. she then gives hoseok a stern look out of the corner of her eye. "hoseok oppa, no sleeping on mine and taehyungie's bed."
"that's right," jimin says with a nod. she then gives hoseok a stern look out of the corner of her eye. "hoseok oppa, no sleeping on mine and taehyungie's bed."
hoseok groans and rolls over. "it's so much more comfortable than mine."
"they're all the same," jimin informs him. "we are in a hotel. they are all the same type of mattress."
"they're all the same," jimin informs him. "we are in a hotel. they are all the same type of mattress."
little does jimin know that hoseok is actually so exhausted because taehyung kept him up long after jimin went to bed last night, texting poor hoseok every single one of his worries.
what if jimin doesn't like the flowers yoongi picked out for her? what if she hates her dress? what if she /does/ get mud all over her dress and shoes? what if she gets angry at taehyung for planning something so big behind her back without her input?
maybe if jimin knew taehyung wanted to renew their vows, she would have wanted to be part of the ceremony planning process too.
taehyung doesn't handle this type of uncertainty well.
taehyung doesn't handle this type of uncertainty well.
in the present, hoseok just groans and complies with her request, begrudgingly pulling himself back up into a sitting position.
anything for jimin and taehyung. he's known the two of them since they were 21 and already madly in love with each other. he knows they deserve this.

"do you want to try your dress on now?" hoseok asks. it's been hanging on a hook on the bathroom door this entire time, and hoseok and jungkook can't stop stealing glances at it. "just to make sure it fits?"
jimin hums. "if it doesn't fit, it's okay. i can always get it altered when we get back home. and it's the thought that counts anyway, oppa. i do think it's something i'd like to wear."
hoseok wants to yell, "we can't get it altered when we get back home! it has to fit today!" but he clamps his mouth shut.
"i'm glad you like it," is all he says.
"i'm glad you like it," is all he says.
jimin closes the bathroom door as she changes, and when she finally emerges again she is smiling.
the dress fits her perfectly. it's a simple white dress that falls off the shoulders and makes her look effortlessly elegant.

"it's very beautiful," jimin tells hoseok, "but it makes me look like i'm getting married." jimin laughs, but she seems a bit embarrassed by her own words. "shouldn't i wear something more casual to a farm?"
"no!" jungkook and hoseok say together in unison before turning to each other with slightly panicked looks.
"we'll wear something nice too and then you'll feel less weird about it, noona," jungkook promises as if that hadn't been the plan all along. "i'll even do our makeup."
"you're going to do my makeup?" jimin raises her eyebrows skeptically. "why? what do you want to do to my face?"
"nothing!" jungkook waves his hands. "i just want to practice! i've been learning a lot about makeup lately, and i promise i'm good. i just want to practice on someone who isn't me or namjoon hyung."
"ah, that's right," jimin says, nodding thoughtfully. "namjoon oppa is your usual test subject, isn't he?"
"i'm not bad!" jungkook loudly insists again.
hoseok bursts into laughter next to him

jungkook is not actually bad at doing makeup, and jimin knows this very well. she just likes to tease their youngest and push his buttons sometimes because she thinks it's funny when he gets all red-faced and determined to prove her wrong. it's endearing.
they leave the hotel forty minutes later in their nice clothes and jimin with gold on her eyelids and a pretty pink blush painted on her cheeks.
jungkook grabs his camera before leaving the hotel and tells jimin he wants to take lots of photos of the farm taehyung grew up on. jimin is touched.
when they arrive and park outside the front of the old farmhouse, jimin texts taehyung a quick, "taehyungie, we're here!"
taehyung does not reply.
"let's go around the back of the house," jungkook suggests casually. "he might be out in the back."
taehyung does not reply.
"let's go around the back of the house," jungkook suggests casually. "he might be out in the back."
jimin's brow furrows. "why? he's probably in the house waiting for us."
"jiminie, trust us," hoseok says, his voice almost giddy. "we know taehyungie very well."

jimin stops walking right in the middle of the yard. "he's /my/ husband," jimin says, crossing her arms across her chest. "are you telling me i don't know my own husband?"
hoseok giggles. "no, but i do think there are some things about your husband that you still do not know."
hoseok giggles. "no, but i do think there are some things about your husband that you still do not know."
"impossible," jimin says dismissively. "we are soulmates. we know everything the other is thinking at any given moment."
"oh?" jungkook prods, grinning now as well. "so what is he thinking right now then?"
"oh?" jungkook prods, grinning now as well. "so what is he thinking right now then?"
"he's wondering why his wife isn't knocking on the front door yet."
both jungkook and hoseok laugh. they're rounding the corner of the house now.
"are you sure about that?" jungkook asks.
jimin stops right in her tracks.

jimin stops right in her tracks.
the first person she sees is her father, standing five feet away and wearing the only suit jimin knows him to own. his arm is outstretched for her to take.
behind him are two large groups of people sitting in chairs and in the middle, an aisle. her vision blurs with tears before she can even see who the figure is standing at the end of the aisle, but jimin already knows. oh, she already knows.
"what is happening?" jimin breathes out, and then immediately bursts into tears.
jungkook is quick to wipe them away. he already has a wad of tissues waiting in his hands.
jungkook is quick to wipe them away. he already has a wad of tissues waiting in his hands.
her father is by her side in a second. "ah, jimin-ah, don't cry," he says as he interlocks their arms.
"what are you doing here?" jimin asks, her voice wobbly as she tries to control her sniffles.
"what are you doing here?" jimin asks, her voice wobbly as she tries to control her sniffles.
"i think you already know why," he says with a smile. "isn't it obvious?"
maybe it is obvious. but jimin just can't believe it.
maybe it is obvious. but jimin just can't believe it.
jimin doesn't remember walking down the aisle. she doesn't remember where jungkook and hoseok go off to. the decorations and the tables and the flowers spanning the entire yard don't even register in her brain yet.
all she can see is taehyung's nervous smile.
all she can see is taehyung's nervous smile.
"taehyungie," she whispers when she is finally in front of him.
he takes her shaking hands in his.
"surprise?" he says and oh, taehyung's hands are also shaking she thinks.

"surprise?" he says and oh, taehyung's hands are also shaking she thinks.
"is this— are we—" jimin still can't even comprehend what is happening and there are so many people watching them.
"this is our vow renewal ceremony," taehyung tells her quietly. "i wanted to do this for you."
"this is our vow renewal ceremony," taehyung tells her quietly. "i wanted to do this for you."
"for me?" she echos, just as quiet. then, she gives him a weak slap on the arm. "how dare you surprise me with this, kim taehyung," she cries, but taehyung can tell she is not actually, truly angry with him.
"you make me cry and then expect me to be able to come up with my own vows to you on the spot! oh, i should have known. when they put me in this dress i should have known."
taehyung smiles sheepishly. "i'd say i'm sorry, but i'm not. i just wanted to celebrate you. to celebrate us. /this/ us. our wedding was beautiful and marrying you was the best day of my life, but that was seven years ago and... a lot of things have changed."
"a lot of things /have/ changed," jimin agrees, voice choked up with emotion.
four years ago jimin confessed to taehyung that she would like to start dressing more femininely, and taehyung had taken her shopping right away.
three years ago, tae had been spooning jimin in bed when jimin whispered into the darkness, "this might sound weird, but i'd like it if you started trying to refer to me as a woman," and tae had whispered back, "why would that ever be weird?" before kissing her.
two years ago, jimin bought herself a little trans flag pin that she attached to her laptop carrying case without saying a word about it.
she also begun growing out her hair.
she also begun growing out her hair.
one year ago tae stayed up late with jimin doing online research after jimin decided that she needed to begin the process of starting HRT right now, that she couldn't wait another moment, and taehyung had told her, "of course, sweetheart. we can figure this all out together."
and now today, jimin stands before taehyung at their makeshift altar, surrounded by all of their close family members and friends, with her hair falling over her shoulders and dressed in an elegant white dress and heels.
this is something jimin thought she would never have the opportunity to have. when she came out as a trans woman at age twenty nine, she thought she had missed her chance.
she was already married. she'd never be able to have the wedding she truly wanted to. she'd never be able to stand in front of the person she loves most, her soulmate, and be declared his wife.
all she'd ever have to remember her wedding day would be photos of her with short hair and wearing a black suit. she'd never get to be the beautiful bride she wanted to be.
but taehyung must have known. he must have figured it out. he must have realized that this was something that jimin needed, something that has been eating away at her for years now.
"i love you," jimin whispers shakily, feeling like she is about to burst.
she has never felt love like this for anyone else. she has never felt so understood and taken care of and adored by anyone else. she is very lucky that she gets to be this wonderful man's wife.
she has never felt love like this for anyone else. she has never felt so understood and taken care of and adored by anyone else. she is very lucky that she gets to be this wonderful man's wife.
jungkook takes photos throughout the entire ceremony, and yoongi records as taehyung stumbles emotionally through his pre-written vows to jimin while she cries and cries.
he also records as jimin declares, very bluntly and tearfully in her own vows, that she is the luckiest woman in the world because she has taehyung by her side.
much later, next to the book of old wedding photos that has sat on their bookshelf for seven years, sits an even thicker photo album, filled to the brim with photos from their vow renewal ceremony.
photos of jimin and taehyung standing hand in hand in front of the makeshift altar. photos of taehyung with his arms wrapped around jimin's waist from behind. photos of jimin smashing cake into a laughing taehyung's face.
photos of jimin and taehyung leaning against a wooden fence as a wooly young cow sneaks up behind them and presses his forehead against a shrieking jimin's back.
photos of jimin, just jimin, in her dress, her gold jewelry glittering in the warm sun and her eyes bright and cheeks rosy as she smiles and laughs, so full of love and life and light.
photos of them surrounded by their friends, arms around each other's waists and big, bright smiles on their faces that rival the brightness of the sun above.
marrying taehyung was one of the most important and monumental days of her life, but that day on taehyung's childhood farm in her white dress and taehyung staring down at her like she was the most beautiful woman in the entire world might have been the loveliest.

[[i have no words to say about this one, only tears. i hope you all enjoyed this and i hope that it made your heart feel very full
also i would like to say that it is never too late to find happiness, whatever that might mean for you.]]
