(A thread).. 1 John 1:9 was a huge barrier to me believing the finished work of Christ. So I thought Iâd explain it
1 John 1:9 is not about asking for continual forgiveness.
1 John 1:9 is about a one-time confession to be saved. Johnâs letter was partly adressed to Gnostics..

Throughout his letters, John was adressing the FALSE idea that (1) Jesus was not physical but rather a spiritual being, and (2) that sin was not real or did not matter...
This false teaching is what is being addressed in 1 John 1:8 â 10. When you understand the historical context of this letter, everything becomes clear, including Johnâs teaching concerning sin and confession. With this in mind, letâs take a second look at 1 John 1:8 â 10.
Now hereâs what it says...
âIf we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.â
1 John 1:8 KJV
âIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.â
1 John 1:9 KJV...
âIf we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.â
1 John 1:8 KJV
âIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.â
1 John 1:9 KJV...
Gnostics held the view that a âspiritual and goodâ God would never become man, to save mankind..
Therefore, these people claimed that the coming of Christ in flesh was only a MERE illusion
...
Therefore, these people claimed that the coming of Christ in flesh was only a MERE illusion

So John spends his entire book combating this doctine stating that any one who claims Christ has not come in the flesh is not of God. ( 1 John 4:3)... Itâs for this reason John begins his letter in 1 John 1 verse 1 by saying..
âThat which was from the beginning, which we have HEARD, which we have SEEN with our eyes, which we have LOOKED upon, and OUR HANDS have HANDLED, of the Word of life;â
1 John 1:1 KJV
Apst John is testifying to these people of the physical manifest of Christ in the flesh...
1 John 1:1 KJV
Apst John is testifying to these people of the physical manifest of Christ in the flesh...
â(For the life was MANIFESTED, and we have SEEN IT, and BEAR WITNESS, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was MANIFESTED UNTO us;)â
1 John 1:2 KJV...
1 John 1:2 KJV...
âThat which we have SEEN and HEARD declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.â
1 John 1:3
John knows the importance of stating this because he understands the problem he was facing..
1 John 1:3
John knows the importance of stating this because he understands the problem he was facing..
In fact this heresy was so problematic back then that Apst John referred to the teaching as âANTI-CHRISTâ
"For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an ANTICHRIST."
-II John 1:7 NKJV
...

-II John 1:7 NKJV

Many Gnostics claimed to have no sin, OR to have never sinned. John in verse 1 John 1:9 is simply telling them that they cannot be cleansed ONCE FOR ALL, if they donât confess that they need a saviour to be cleansed them from the entity of sin itself...
John isnât writing about progressive forgiveness
.. John is writing about sin being eradicated once FOR ALL. Heâs talking about once for all remission of sins. He was inviting, âGnostics sin-deniersâ to admit their sinfulness to receive and enjoy total cleansing from Christ..

How do we know this ?..
John then changes his audience, and addresses fellow believers by saying..
âMY LITTLE CHILDREN, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And IF any man sin, WE HAVE AN ADVOCATE with the Father, JESUS CHRIST the righteous:â
1 John 2:1 KJV..
See !! Christ has totally redeemed us from our sins, HE also advocates for us IF we ever sin. We donât advocate for ourselves by asking for forgiveness daily. Instead, Christ advocates for us through his blood. We have receive ONCE FOR ALL remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22)..
Hence, John even mentions prior to 1 John 1:9, he says that whoever is in Christ has been cleansed from ALL sins.
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from ALL sin"
1 John 1:7
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from ALL sin"
1 John 1:7
^^ Who are those whom walk in the light, those who are in God, becauee God is light (1 John 1:5).. Those who are in Christ are in like and not darkness (John 8:12) such persons have received the remissions of sins...
Does this mean that I donât have to confess my sins anymore. Welp, remember you have a relationship with God and confession is just to be transparent with him. However, your confession isnât why youâre forgiven... Hereâs a thread that might helped too. https://twitter.com/Itsyaboytim1/status/1330933504394276864
Itâs not your effort to ask for forgiveness daily that saves you. Itâs Christ work on the cross. (Ephesians 2:8-9). https://twitter.com/itsyaboytim1/status/1350552450336489473
A born-again man has been freed from sin (Rom 6:6) when he received Christ.. 1 John 1:8 isnât referring to the born-again man. But to those that rejected the deity of Christ.
