lotta people seem to dislike the Film Twitter Discourse Movie of the Week trying to solve for the director's perspective instead of assessing the text *as a story* first and foremost
every critique of the narrative i have heard - including several valid ones - has seemingly been a secondary thought to the most vehemently negative takes. all of those seem to be rooted in being mad at Levinson for what they perceive to be his ethics, not for the movie itself
the issue i take with it is so many seem to take Malcolm, who is anxious, drunk, delirious and FREQUENTLY proven wrong to be Levinson's mouthpiece. as if his words are gospel, even though the script scrutinizes him harder than any of the people he scrutinizes.
like fights between close friends and lovers, the M&M script is about diving into ideas where you have half a point and are half on your fucking high horse. and it's bold in the way that it doesn't HAND you an answer to every question it asks. the mess reflects real life mess.
