While @j_g_allen has been consistent since July about the importance of reopening schools and how it can be done safely, the framing from CNN has certainly changed between his 3 appearances in July and his return this past week. đŸ§” https://twitter.com/j_g_allen/status/1357881277609877506
#1 (July): Chyron and CNN tweet refer to push to reopen schools as a demand from VP Pence, focused on comment that Pence was "irresponsible," even as @j_g_allen outlines risks of reopening can be minimized while risks of remaining virtual are huge.
#2 (July): Chyron reads "Trump doubles down on reopening as pandemic worsens" not "Harvard expert says school buildings can be made safe with more fresh air" positioning school reopening as a bad Trump idea.
#3 (July): Chyron reads "Trump claims children, parents dying by keeping schools closed" and "Trump pushes to reopen all schools...". CNN anchor refers to a "terrifying tale" of a teacher who died of COVID after sharing a room with 2 other teachers during *virtual* summer school.
#4 (Feb): @ErinBurnett of CNN points out @j_g_allen "has been saying for months that students can return to schools safely," chyron focuses on CDC guidance coming next week, and she thanks him for "calm recitation of the facts and the data."
To recap, nothing about the data or the science changed, and the message from @j_g_allen didn't change, but the way in which it was positioned by CNN certainly changed between July and February. Just another example of how media messaging has created fear around school reopening.
