Gonna chime in here as a behavioral economist and say this is ABSOLUTELY part of the design of these games. They are absolutely designing this as a core mechanic of the addictive mechanism of these games to connect more parts of players' brains into mechanisms of addiction. https://twitter.com/nikitamissle/status/1357827507215609859

These games are not just designed to generate addictive cycles, but connect different parts of base neuropsychology to those cycles to reinforce that addiction. It's made even worse by adding a shared, social experience.
Even this discourse is part of that design.

They are designed to hijack fundamental flaws in human psychology and the very basic ways our brains works.
They weaponize those flaws for profit and at the risk of the health of players.
