🔵Joao Cancelo

Cancelo has had a fantastic season for City so far, playing in a sort of a hybrid inverted right back role. His positioning in and out of possession is extremely fluid, where he typically steps into the midfield in the final 2 in possession phases.

Short Thread👇
Average Positioning in Possession:

While City had 74% possession in this match, Cancelo was able to play for most of the match in his midfield role, where he typically forms a midfield 3 on the right side.

Heat map:

Again, we can see City´s dominance in possession, where Cancelo was able to join the attack in the right half-space, where he often collects possession from the back 3 in the middle 3rd, & supports the front 4 in the final 3rd.

Touches:

Touch map shows that on the rare occasions when City started their attack from the build up, he forms a back 4 on the right. The further City progress the ball, the more narrow he becomes, supporting the attack & offering protection in rest defence.

Positioning in Build Up phase:

More traditional positioning in a back 4 on the right.
Positioning in Progression phase:

Steps into the midfield forming a midfield 3 when City establish their attack in the middle of the pitch.
Positioning in the Final 3rd phase:

Typically provides support to the front 4 in the right half-space, often coming on an overlap or underlap, creating space for the RW to attack.
Positioning in Low Block:

Again, here we see more traditional right back positioning as part of a back 4 when City get pushed back into their own half.
Positioning in Mid Block:

Quite traditional positioning still, typically pressing with a back 4 in the middle of the pitch.
Positioning in High Block:

When City press further up the pitch, Cancelo typically crosses midfield, pressing high on the wings.
