Challenge people to explain what they mean when they say “communism has never worked anywhere”. Because when they try, they should logically have to explain what it means for capitalism to work. Then you can ask them a few questions:
“Has it lifted everyone out of poverty?”
“Has it lifted everyone out of poverty?”
“Has it restored global working class power?”
“Has it fed all the hungry people of the world?”
“Has it challenged imperialism?”
Of course, it’ll follow that capitalism has done none of these things as it either uses these to survive or perpetuates them itself. Capitalism fails.

On the other hand, at various points in history socialist countries can point to winning the space race. 0% unemployment. Workplace democracy. Greater food security than the U.S. and a greater rate of doctors and universal healthcare. Just to name a few examples. Socialism works.
