IN 2003, the IRS partnered with a group of companies called the "Free File Alliance", which is a group of tax software companies to help Americans file their taxes ONLINE for FREE.

They intentionally deeply buried the links for the free filing software that most everyone signed up for the NON-FREE version of the software and assumed it wasn't free.
It is supposed to be 100% free.

100 million households are eligible to use the free program. According to this 2018 press release from the IRS, only 53 million have used it since 2003.
That is 3.3% of eligible households.
This is a public-private partnership that is not working.

The IRS made improvements in 2019.

If you make above $72,000, the IRS has free fillable online forms for free online prep.. They will be available on February 12. This is NOT tax prep help software- you have to know what forms, etc.

I will try the free online forms this year but may use a tax prep service because they provide guidance that might be helpful for me.
But most don't need to pay if they don't want.
