So, I feel pretty dumb because I continue missing the point when I should recognize it in the moment. When I shared that girl punching the tree video (it’s a funny video) there is something that I should’ve mentioned.
Some (like myself) were wondering why she would need to beat on a tree to train? It’s pretty obvious why. Hitting a male isn’t like hitting another woman. When dealing with an average sized male, they’re still built a lot different than women are.
So, to fight off someone who is bigger or stronger, you have to equal that and even surpass it. But, it’s deeper than that, too. There’s no reason why a woman or girl, no-less, should *have* to do that. We can teach men and boys not to do these things.
Any man saying “I’ll never go to those classes,” is probably one of those violent men. Patriarchy, like white supremacy, is a position of power. And what men do to women is terror if you look deeply into that entire process. A misogynist and sexist can rape a woman...
And that’s both mental and physical harm. But there’s also threats of violence. If a woman is brave enough to speak up about her experience, she can go to court and have to re-live the event that tortures her every day and night, only to not be believed...and suffer more trauma.
Patriarchy is a horrific thing, it’s just as destructive as much any form of supremacy. And education is far more vital, than training a girl to destroy a tree to be able to beat a man for trying to harm her. Not saying that’s explicitly why she was training that way...
I’m just saying women are training to defend themselves. Some unwillingly, they just do it so that they can defend themselves if that time comes. Also, equating “looks” as a factor for rape, that’s also not so true. Rapists are opportunistic, it’s not about sex.
