People like binary arguments such as rational conservation versus animal rights, well it is not a binary, I can both question rhetoric around jay & magpie eradication, suggest we let society and science judge if native birds need culling not self appointed people, what is welfare
issue of killing an adult and leaving nestlings to starve? what is ecological reality of culling a species which eats injurious insects?

I can ask these questions challenging a socio-economic historic group who eradicated much of British native predators, and who would shoot
curlew and in some cases go on holiday shooting turtle dove, maybe thrushes? A buzzard is a problem to them just because once they were persecuted to absence and have now returned to former abundance. These birds are territorial and have density dependent population dynamics.
Different to fox in which population does seem to increase with food and animals make long distance journeys between human food sources and wader rich meadows. In some cases such as pig feeding maybe this applies to some corvids. Does to ravens and food waste in California.
These are not animal rights arguments, I personally can see that successful beaver and especially boar reintroduction needs management. Boar needs more culling than deer so fecund are they. Attempting to make this rational countryman (some are disingenuous bigots) versus animal
rights is an easy and lazy narrative designed to discredit dissenting voices who hear endless rhetoric and cherry picked science from shooting industry which releases 50 million game-birds and feeds thousands of tons of grain, littering land with lead.
My shooting neighbour is disgusted by the increase in money driven bad shooting, as he said some of them are such bad shots they need many birds put over them to hit anything. He was interested in the idea of an exam as in Hungary. If you can not use gun and recognise quarry as
he said what business do you have shooting living targets, play target shooting with clays. He is certain shooting is destroying itself with this commercially driven excess.

Some keepers may be reasonable he thinks some are, but locally

I have no idea if Christopher Carter and Chris Carter is the same man, convicted of disgusting cruelty which should have resulted in a life time ban from owning a gun and working as a keeper or pest controller.
Animal rights I am against, I am also against barbaric torture, cruelty, bigoted persecution. It is not just economic gain this is a battle over who controls society and how. Not a binary.
I can support food hunting, population culling of deer and boar, fox and rational intervention with problem corvid while objecting to the ‘guardians of the countryside’ and their utter bullshit, sophistry and cruelty.
These people would return to kingfisher pole traps
It is not just a multi-million pound industry greenwashing itself (much of cash in lifestyle clothes and crap to city types) but it is a particularly toxic part of an elite attempting to impose their world view by pretend rational argument and dog whistles. Intelligent members of
same elite are disgusted by excess and abuse and see clearly the damage this is doing to rational hunting activities (using US & European concept of hunting). It does raise interesting questions, why do deer a wild animal belong to a landowner. We might be better off with a
system like Hungary, game belongs to state, hunting clubs have a lease, exams taken, democratisation of hunting and proper deer population control and meat market?
