ive said this before but i really dont understand why the "true crime fandom" isnt rabidly anti-cop. it is literally impossible to read a single in-depth piece about any mysterious crime without stubbing your toe on rampant police misconduct, corruption, laziness, etc
(cw missing indigenous women, sexual assault)
host: so why arent you dragging the river
cop: because bodies dont sink. that never happens
forensic anthropologist: oh yeah bodies disarticulate and sink basically right away. bodies all over the river probly

even babby's first true crime, the JonBenét Ramsey case, is specifically so fucked up and mysterious BECAUSE the cops bungled it so hard. they didnt rope anything off, let people walk back and forth over active crime scenes and remove evidence, etc etc
btw if you are interested in that case or the subject matter at all, do not miss Casting JonBenét on netflix. i have watched so much bad true crime shit and this is just something else completely. a totally bizarre and new approach to the subject and the genre
most mysterious murders would be significantly less mysterious if the cops ever did anything they are "supposed to" do at all, instead of what they actually do, which is take steroids, steal from civilians, shoot dogs and children, feed the carceral state, etc
