🧵 1. I was asked on here how we advance independence given the UK Government's current position and also about the need for a 'Plan B' ahead of May's elections. I appreciate there are different views and I don't claim to have all the answers but this is my take on things 👇
2. Scotland’s independence will happen when a majority want it to happen - not just answer yes to a pollster but are ready to vote for it. As for Plan B,C,D etc - I think it confuses tactics and strategy and, to quote Eisenhower, "plans are useless but planning is indispensable."
3. The key question in my view is not how Scotland becomes independent but how to win the argument that Scotland should be independent. That is our strategic objective: making independence the clear settled will of people in Scotland. Process will develop in response to support.
4. The fundamental argument for independence is a democratic one. The serious, reasonable approach of the Scottish Government & the SNP is forcing the UK Government, through its own actions, to show the UK as being undemocratic and unable to accommodate a distinct Scottish voice.
5. Everything we do in campaigning for independence needs to meet an obvious criteria: will it increase support or will it reduce support? Brexit has driven support for independence because it has shown the reality of Scotland's place in the UK. UKG saying No reinforces that.
6. The UK Government's intransigence should not be viewed as a barrier to independence. Rather, reframe it as an argument for independence through demonstrating unambiguously the imbalance and inequality of power that exists within the UK. Use that argument to convince others.
7. The process questions are ultimately political questions and as such can only be resolved politically. Legal approaches can play an important supporting role but cannot usurp the primacy of politics. Fundamentally, politics comes down to persuasion and we can all play a part.
8. Finally, no one can be absolutely sure how all this will play out. Like life in general, it's complex and uncertain. My view is that the side that succeeds will be the one that can handle the complexity and uncertainty and doesn't blink first. By that measure, we're winning.
