Was thinking about Ueno again, and I think I can finally slightly put into words one of the main reasons I love her.
She represents what it feels like to be stuck in the past and not be ready to change, and how hard it is to be stuck while everyone else is moving forward.

Ueno can be very insecure, and projects her insecurities on other ppl throughout the story. She believes that nobody else can change bc she can't begin to understand it herself. She wants everyone else to stay static because she doesn't want to be the only one still bitter.
It's not that Ueno doesn't regret what happened, bc she does. Deeply. Not because of how she treated Shouko, but because of how it ended up affecting Shoya.
She regrets hurting someone she cared about, and wants to give back everything he lost - exactly the way it was before.

She doesn't want him to move on and find happiness where she isn't able to reach him, somewhere different from the place that they were last able to both be happy together as friends. Simply put, she's stuck.
Her character isn't trying to say "her actions were justified because she was sad! :(" or "she tells people that it's ok to be stuck :)". Her actions are deplorable and the way she thinks and acts is just flat-out wrong.
And honestly, I love that.

She's not meant to tell you that everyone is ok the way they are. People need to change and grow as they live.
What she does tell you, is that it's never too late for you. You can fall to the deepest depths, but nobody is fundamentally incapable of change.

It's a message that a younger me really needed to hear in a world so full of stories of good people with good intentions getting happy endings.
Because the truth is, the real Uenos of the world aren't connecting with Ueno. They connect with Ishida along with the Ishidas of the world.
Ueno gives a chance for those who feel like they're evil to believe they can change, no matter how flawed they think they are.

That sums up one part of my own emotional connection to her I guess lol. She's def a very unique character with a unique message, so I feel bad seeing her cast as just a bitch or being lumped in with all the characters who are evil but were secretly nice all along.
Plus, this doesn't even begin to cover how well written she is in the context of the main story and the functions she serves as a parallel to Ishida. She's a great interpretation of the topic of change and forgiveness and is truly special to me.
Basically ASV is an absolute masterpiece and Ueno is cool haha hehe hoho send tweet
