6 months ago, the Japanese vessel MV Wakashio began leaking fuel after crashing into an incredibly fragile coral reef near Mauritius.

This is the worst ecological disaster that the country has ever known.

Before the leak was stopped, around 1000 tonnes of oil leaked from the ship and severely contaminated the precious shoreline and lagoons.

Tens of thousands of people, including local fishing communities and volunteers, were exposed to the toxic components of the oil spill.

It contaminated the food system and polluted the island’s beautiful landscapes.

The Japanese company Mitsui OSK Lines (MoL), one of the world’s largest shipping companies, was operating the MV Wakashio.

The shipping industry has simply been let off the hook for too long.
