Asking Robert ‘Westferry Scandal’ Jenrick for help with good governance & saying the Lutfur Rahman years were angelic, cos you’re unhappy with a plan to put in green spaces, improve pedestrian/disability/cycle access and reduce traffic through council estates here, is a tad OTT
But what is so much worse are the constant attempts to dehumanise the councillors and team behind the Liveable Streets programme.

It isn’t “demonic” to try and improve people’s health by reducing air pollution and increasing active travel.
We’ve all seen where that sort of extremist rhetoric leads to recently in the States.

Calling people monsters? Accusing them of crimes that so ludicrous they are only believed on wilder online forums? It is only done when the real debate based on evidence has been lost.
Then there are the flat out lies from this campaign.

They say there have been no equality assessments. The EQIA for Bethnal Green is right there on the council website and has been since before it was approved. As are the EQIAs for the 2 other approved schemes Wapping and Bow.
I had to go look myself, but it doesn’t take much searching on Google and it didn’t need all the theatrics of a Freedom of Information request. All the EQIAs are in the cabinet papers for each decision on Liveable Streets.
Just because you don’t like what it says, or think it isn’t good enough, doesn’t mean it hasn’t been done.

Same with the consultation. I’ve been in the same consultation meetings with the local anti-LTN campaigners who now say there was no consultation.
You can criticise how consultations were done, but they did happen, and the anti-LTN campaign linked to this account started at that point with leaflet drops, whatsapps, doorknocking, emails, all the usual community campaign stuff to try to convince their neighbours to object...
And the result is exactly as you see now. Most people could see good and bad in the scheme, but overall there was decent support by community consultation standards for it. Despite a strong anti-Liveable Streets campaign, enough people here wanted it to happen.
At that point there was a choice. Engage positively if critically with the design team to get bits that weren’t good enough fixed; or descend to conspiracy theories, dismissing evidence & resort to namecalling.

Only one of those approaches gets a good result for the community.
In the end, it will be a good result. The works so far look great & once they bed in, I’m sure most folk round here will look at them & wonder what the fuss was about, but only because a quieter set of neighbours got stuck in to understand the plans and worked to make them better
