1958 MUNICH AIR DISASTER - A THREAD

In remembrance of those who died on this day 63 yrs ago, thought it might be a good idea to tell you lot all about this tragedy in slightly greater detail.
The victims, better known as the Busby Babes, was a fearsome side. They reached a 2nd successive European Cup (now UCL) semifinal, and was in the title race to win a 3rd English Football League (now PL) in a row.
They were on their way home from Yugoslavia, having beaten Red Star Belgrade to reach the European cup semifinal on a 5-4 aggregate.
The flight they took stopped in Munich to refuel, and when they attempted to take off the plane hit a pile of snow on the runway, sending it off the airport fence and crashed as it hit a house, tearing off one of its wings in the process.
The accident resulted in 23 casualties out of 44 passengers, including 8 players & 3 club officials.
AFTERMATH

Sir Matt Busby was one of the survivors, he was replaced by his assistant Jimmy Murphy until his recovery, who was managing the Welsh national team in Cardiff at the time of the crash.
United had to promote players form the youth team to survive the rest of the season. They couldnt sustain their title challenge, lost the euro cup semifinal to Ac Milan, but was able to reach the FA Cup final in which Bolton beat them to the trophy 2-0.
Although finishing 9th itl, the European Cup invited United to join the competition the next season, where they were drawn to swiss side Young Boys. But the English Football League didn't allow United to join the competition and the 2 sides only met 60 years later.
After Sir Matt Busby's full recovery from the crash, he returned and brought the European cup home 10 years later.
Don't really know how to wrap this up properly tbh.. lol

But yeah the Busby babes will always be in our hearts & our rebuild from the incident was surely phenomenal
