the commodification of queerness, being fed straight-washed media representation, and mixing rigid identity politics w/ fandom bullshit has actively fucked up so much of how the current gen of queers engage w/ the world, their history (they dont), and queer elders (disrespectful)
It really sucks that it feels suffering less and being provided more resources has instilled in many a lack of respect for what we went through and built a fixation on moralistic rules and meaningless signifiers. they have something so there is not a lot of the yearning we had.
Honestly what makes me most sad is that it feels like the only way to get through to them is with a twitter thread or a children's cartoon where girls kiss. Like from all ive witnessed, they won't do the readings and they wont engage with art we made. it's a bummer
What really puzzles me is despite how close our generations are/how digitally we both grew up, they do things so differently. Sure we had fandom and dumb identity politics, but we still craved real connection and our history and culture and sought it out. i want that for them
Sure I used to follow doctor who accounts and yourfaveisproblematic, but I was on the internet in the 00s and early 10s b/c i wanted to vent my feelings, learn about my history, and find gay people to fuck me and hang out with in real life! yall are just in a weird outrage spiral
Like to some degree every generation worries about the ones that come after them and feels they were the last to do things right, but I think our gen sucks in a lot of ways too! We're fine i guess, i just think they've really lost the mission with a lot. hope they figure it out!
