As the % of non-TT faculty & the # of recent PhDs increases, our talk of equity must expand its reach. It's one thing to preach inclusion in TT hiring. But if you're not ready to treat your equally qualified non-TT colleagues as peers, then your approach is morally barren. 1/3
I thought about all this as I spoke to some grad students about the job market today. This cohort, the next, and the next 50 are likely going straight to non-TT jobs when they will be at least as qualified/talented as the TT faculty calling the shots in their departments. 2/3
If we're not going to halt the crisis (and it looks like we aren't), then we'd better damn well start taking some steps now to chart a more equitable future for recent PhDs who shouldn't be treated as second-class citizens just because they graduated 2-3 decades too late. 3/3
