So you can either choose to study marine engineering ( working in the engine room on a ship ) or maritime navigation ( which I did meaning that you get to navigate/drive ships)
You’ll study for a year in university and after a year
You’ll study for a year in university and after a year
after a year you’ll do what is called sea time (like an internship) for 12 -15 months.
The nice thing about sea time you get to travel the world while you are also training ( you get paid in dollars /pounds depending on the company you are working for )

After you’ve completed your seatime . You come back and then you’ll be examined .Oral exam . Once you pass it then you get a license. That license allows you to navigate/drive all kinds of ships ( big ships
like cruise liners ,container ships , tankers etc)

So now you’ll go back to the company that you were training in and start working officially as a 3rd officer and you get to be in charge of a watch driving a ship on your own or pulling watch as a 3rd engineer if you chose engineering
Obviously the are disadvantage and advantages in each and every carrier .The maritime industry is male dominated
and there’s only a few females. A lot of companies are very reluctant to hire females .When I was on my ship I was the only female and only South African onboard

But if you love to travel you’ll enjoy it but kuyasetyenzwa Hayi nje kancinci pha it’s not a child’s play the money is good but the only problem when are you going to spend this money because you are basically at sea for 3/4 months and only at home for a max of 2 months.
Andiyazi I’ll do another thread about the fishing industry which really doesn’t require you to go to university .If I have time I’ll also tell you why I decided to stop working at sea and what other alternatives can one do if they have studied maritime studies but don’t want to
Sail . So if you’ve studied you and get an unlimited license which I have
you get to navigate all kinds of ships . Pictures below

Feel free to ask me anything I’m sure I’ve missed so many things kule thread
