Not just women, but trans persons as well. Not even one 'out' trans person is a part of the Indian judiciary. Swati Bidhan Baruah, Joyita Mondal, Satyashri Sharmila, Megh & so many others are all path breakers but in case people don't notice... 1/ https://twitter.com/ICLU_Ind/status/1357649899983044612
Trans persons often can't get into law schools as such. Or be openly as ourselves in our campus spaces. Most law schools even don't take the initiative to frame a policy, let alone reach out to in reality, trans persons to support their studies.
When CLAT itself has as high as a fees of Rs. 4000 or 3500, how do you expect trans persons to even get into NLUs, 'premier legal institutions' (unless we come from extremely privileged backgrounds & have family+ financial support etc)? From the sky?
But that won't be enough. How many trans persons are part of our Bar Councils and openly so? Gender Justice as it is taught in many law schools tends to be savarna/dominant caste cis women's justice! (I am savarna too).
Unfortunately, often in legal spaces, trans persons almost invariably seems to mean dominance of trans women & when cis folks say transgender persons they come to mean only trans women or trans feminine persons. Trans men are almost always forgotten!
Trans persons as writers of our own destinies, our lives and our futures, our writings, books are not even found much in law libraries or prescribed as part of curriculums.
There is so much to say on this, but have to write a piece (I am lazy!!!).
Even tokenistically speaking: Would there ever be a webinar or panel of "trans, queer persons in law" hosted by legal platforms? Or is it always going to be only cis women?
Clarification: Not speaking of simply a conference, or of specific discussions on trans persons' rights, but one of trans persons in law similar to women in law panels that keeps happening & should happen :)
