i lied and started watching the interview even though i have to leave in 10 minutes.

i find it very interesting (and telling) that gege's discussion partners for WSJ for a long while were only female classmates.
also lol @ host saying gege had the most successful/fulfilling elementary school experience out of all of his mangaka guests so far (he actually called it a harem like in harem mangas haha)

"everyone else just stayed at home drawing"
gege saying they wanted to treat jjk as a learning experience even if it gets cancelled early on but then the threat of it happening came earlier than expected so they "went up a gear"
gege's older brother was the one to buy WSJ and gege was forbidden from touching it so they'd read it in secret haha.
also, super interesting - after the host commented on how gege is a WSJ kid through and through, gege answered they view it as their "homework" to find out how to get out of those frames.

ig this explains why jjk feels very inversive even though it does employ shounen tropes
hmm, the reason why in the end gege chose "jump" over "afternoon" was because the one they were actually subscribed to was jump and they were worried about working in an unfamiliar environment. ("it's scary when you don't know the vibe/atmosphere of a magazine".)
gege only decided to become mangaka in a more official capacity around the age where uni students start job hunting. (but they wanted to become one as early as elementary s.)
that's also when they told their parents. before that they'd draw & show it to their like minded friends
help, gege is hilarious jadbsfkdgfh
about being encouraged by getting told they have talent by an editor when their 1st work got rejected

"back then i was convinced that all editors are amazing"
"back then? ngl it kind of sounds like you don't think that anymore??"
"well, there are individual differences"
whenever gege's speaking they show that unmoving mechamaru doll and i'm dying
about their penname - right from the beginning gege had no intention of using their real name. they decided to go with something "self-condescending fitting the current times" + they like sound repetitions (gege) + they wanted something short when written in kanji (on covers etc.
at first they thought of going with "doku dami miruku" [damii?] because they wanted something cute (host:''...and that's cute?") but when written in kanjis it gave off a too strong impression (and was too long?).
for their author portrait - something easy to draw + one eye because when drawing two eyes you have to be careful about the balance etc. and "that's annoying" + something cute "and there don't seem to be people that hate cats".

(gege said they as a person aren't very lovable😂)
gege: i'm very small fry-ish

gege please
i hope one day when gege's a true big shot they can draw their idol battle manga if they still feel like it
talking about how volume 0 wasn't always "volume 0" but its own separate work but it was gege's editor's business strategy to incorporate it as a prequel & release it as part of the series after (/if/) the actual series does well and gege took the gamble.
interesting that this is something gege would disclose in a first ever tv interview. or i guess, while the series is still being published.
i wonder what an actual horror manga from gege would be like since they talk about liking horror in general and volume 0 being a horror remade into a school setting
talking about the title and how "jujutsu" would be hard to pronounce for voice actors etc. and what few jjk VA content i have personally consumed does actually mention that 😂. (e.g. juju talk w/ nakamura yuuichi re: gojou's narration about the era of flourish for jujutsu haha)
when vol. 1 came out, it apparently sold better than expected and there had to be a reprint, so gege went to a bookstore wanting to hear the "sorry we're sold out" line but they did actually have it there ahdbhf

"i couldn't say it [jujutsu kaisen] properly at all"
gege: "i was imagining it as an emergency situation where it's sold out from the very first volume but it wasn't like that at all /laughs"

😂😂😂
about yuuji's hoodie

"that's probably just naruto's influence. the neck being hidden - it stimulates/speaks to this juvenile perception of 'coolness'"

(lit. "8th grader feel", i.e. teenagers trying to be cool asbjdkfg)
lol gege saying they wanted to separate yuuji from themselves visually as well ("i wouldn't wear a jacket over a hoodie like this, it's very youthful")

"i wanted him to shoulder the burden of a shounen manga protagness i'm not good at"

but they assure they don't hate him haha
so it's not like gege hates yuuji but he's the type they're bad at& especially in the beginning it was hard to "make him move"
yuuji's not easily swayed which makes it difficult to advance the story. but he flourishes when he's together with easily swayed charas (host: like todo)
