Social model absolutists will tweet "no one is fucking broken. It’s our shit 'society' that’s broken around us." But you know what? My body :is: broken. The desire for an inclusive society – a desire I fervently share – doesn't erase the physical pain I experience
Let me give you my priors: I believe that human suffering is bad and that the alleviation of human suffering is good.

If we don't agree on those points? I fear the rest of this thread won't be of much interest to you. But if we do, then let's talk some about the implications?
For most people, experiencing intense pain is suffering, and, therefore, according to our starting principles, bad.

What kind of pain? It could be the pain of a breaking a bone, or migraine, or CRPS, or neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia or, or, or...
My not wanting to be in pain is not internalized ableism. My friends' wanting a cure for cancer or ALS or parkinsons is not internalized ableism. My wishing the friends I've lost were still here is not internalized ableism.
Can a more inclusive society help? Yes, of course it can. It can offer better medical care, more social supports, remove barriers, put in place means of affirmatively providing access.

None of that is going to stop the debilitating pain I experience.
Are there disabilities that are imposed by society? Yes, of course there are. For example, many types of neurodivergence are needlessly and senselessly punished (i.e. made disabling) by the neurotypical world.

A neurotypical and ableist world.
I'm tired of inspiration porn too. I'm tired of being told the only disability is a bad attitude, especially by corporations profiting off of those ableist structures they're reinforcing. I'm tired of 30 years not being long enough.
If yours is a disability that is entirely socially imposed, then know I will fight alongside you for full inclusion & equity.

I ask you to accept that your experience of disability is but one of many & to consider solidarity with those of us who think our bodies broken.
I'd ask that you fight alongside those of us who need biomedical research to alleviate our suffering.
The social model of disability does not account for the disablement I experience solely because of the chronic illness I live with. To insist all disability is socially constructed is to erase me and people like me. https://twitter.com/mattbc/status/1030560530526814213?s=20
