Y'know what's medically interesting about the Onana UEFA suspension?
What he tested positive for isn't actually a 'performance-enhancing drug' like the typical ones (ab)used by athletes. It's just a 'peeing pill'.

Lemme tell you why it's a violation. 😉
𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗜-𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗!
First of all, context.

In a statement released by @AFCAjax , their number 1 goalie, Cameroon star 🇨🇲 & Rihanna fan (inside-joke), Andre Onana, accidentally took LASIMAC; a pill that is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency @wada_ama , yeah?

🖼️: @Squawka
Enyewe in his defense, this is a plausible reason. The pills do look similar!

how it started: how it went:
So on that morning in October '20 when he was tested, the drug was found in his urine.

FUN FACT: it's so ironic that they did the test when they did it because this medication usually has a short half-life; within 24-48 hours, it's usually undetectable!! so unfortunate! 😂😂
So yeah, now UEFA has banned him for a whole 12 months cause of this violation. Lazima he & Ajax's lawyers will be hard at work appealing the decision! 👨‍⚖️👩‍⚖️

Anyway, let's talk about the medicine/science now. 💉💊
So firstly, for some strange reason, we don't call these drugs 'peeing pills' (someone help me patent this name quick!) 😭😭😂

They're called diuretics/water pills. They stimulate diuresis/ peeing.
Diuretics work in different ways & different parts of the kidney; but main function is to increase rate of urine flow & adjust volume & composition of body fluids or eliminate excess fluid from tissues.

(here's a detailed image of the kidney nephron, kama you're interested)
The specific one Onana "what's-my-name" (Rihanna inside-joke explained😅) was found with is FUROSEMIDE; a loop diuretic that functions at the thick ascending loop of Henle (TAL) by inhibiting the YEAH YEAH YEAH..

Can we get to the exciting part of this thread already?! 🤡🤡😅
So in 1988, diuretics were banned in sports because they could be abused in two ways:
1. These drugs can cause rapid weight loss so athletes could use them to qualify for some sports categories.
In addition to this, diuretics are sometimes used by bodybuilders in addition to steroids cause this increases muscle definition.

Lemme explain...
Think about it this way: as you "reduce the water" in your body, the muscles look more 'tone' and look more "defined".

You pop this pill, chukua some steroids, work out kiasi-kiasi & boom! 💪💪💪
Second reason why diuretics are banned is cause they can be used as masking agents to mask concentration of other doping agents by increasing urine volume.

Yaani...
By taking the diuretic, your pee will be so dilute due to diuresis that in the event you'd taken other doping agents, they are likely not to be detected, y'kna'a'mean?

cocaine & steroids will just be chilling in that pee undetected. 😅
So if they find Furosemide or any other diuretic in your urine, they conclude that there must be something you're trying to hide hence why you used it.

I think lawyers call it criminal intent but TL lawyers @coffeesoon_ & @Pombembaya can tell us moja-mbili on that. 👀
Diuretics can be used as a single dose right before being tested to mask the other doping agents, or can be used chronically over a period of time for its weight loss purpose.

so that's why testing positive at any point is considered mad suspicious' y'know? 👀
Of course this doesn't mean that athletes can't use these drugs for the pharmaceutical purpose that they serve; eg, in heart failure & hypertension among other reasons.

then, they gots to have (literally) a doctor's note nini-nini, & shouldn't test positive on anything else...
So yeah, that's why this homie, at only 24 years, has how whole career under sieke/siege.

man, I wish him the best and hope they rule in his favour! 😭😭
I'd have loved to tag & thank my UoN Pharmacology lecturers but I don't think any of them are on Twitter.

S/O to Dr Omonge & Dr Waweru, especially. Great lads those ones!
that's about it...

have a great day! :)
