Let’s talk about Captain Von Trapp, also known as “Der Kapitan,” or as I like to call him, “Der Iron Baron.” /1
We’re told that Von Trapp is the highest ranking officer in the Austrian navy, and that he was a war hero in the Great War. The problem: Austria is landlocked.

Did Von Trapp rise to this rank fighting lake pirates? Sailing PT boats down the Danube in search of Colonel Kurtz? /2
Does Von Trapp wake up from a drunken stupor muttering “Vienna. I’m still in Vienna?”

No. /3
Von Trapp must have been an officer in the Imperial Austro-Hungarian navy. And since he’s about 40, that means he was a captain at approximately 20 years old. No navy would give a battleship to one so young. /4
And they didn’t have SCUBA in 1918, so Von Trapp isn’t an undersea commando or a frogman.

Von Trapp commanded U-boats. /5
Austria, like Germany, practiced unrestricted submarine warfare in the Adriatic and East Mediterranean in the Great War. But a U-boat couldn’t take on the British Royal Navy.

So Von Trapp, spent the war torpedoing Italian merchant ships, probably gunning down the survivors. /6
There’s your hero, Nun Lady. An imperial baron who spent his war years massacring helpless Italians shipping olive oil and tomato sauce.

No wonder the Nazis wanted him. Von Trapp was a Teutonic war criminal. They wanted him to serve Der Fuhrer once more. /7
And it gets deeper.

Von Trapp escapes the SS And is resettled in Vermont. Which again had NO COAST. Unless lakes count. Why did the OSS take on a Nazi submarine war criminal, give him papers and a new name in Vermont? /8
Because Von Trapp helped design the US campaign of unrestricted submarine warfare against Japan, that’s why. Von Trapp is a double war criminal, with the blood of thousands of Italians and Japanese and Koreans on his hands. /9
Captain Baron Von Trapp is no better than Nazi rocket scientists. He’s an undersea Werner Von Braun, aiding war crimes for any master who will pay him.

There’s your hero, Nun Lady.
UPDATE: Lot of apologists for war criminals in my mentions.
