Community consultation... I think we need to be clear that a person who works within an organization cannot be the check box for community consultation. Community consultation needs to happen outside of the organization. The foundation needs to be grounded in relationships.
Seeking community consultation after you have created/built/written is a checkbox exercise. It’s not authentic & omits the relationship piece.

How can it be 2021 & we still not know how to be in relationship w/ community & claim to be engaged in anti-oppressive practices?
We cannot give power to teams that are assembled in organizations to make decisions on behalf of communities. We know better! (ie Indian Act) These teams are in a system built on colonialism. The system has its own agenda dictated by colonialism.
So, what is our action? Stop doing anything that directly impacts communities w/o community input from the beginning. If you don’t stop it, you are the oppressor. Stop speaking on behalf of communities. I have said this before- I am a visitor in this territory so I must consult.
I am hearing stories across the province around “consultation process”. These are not words. These involve action and commitment to a relationship and if you aren’t leading this way, you need to step aside.

We are tired and we need change now. My daughters are counting on it.
