@chi_streets is currently petitioning @chicago to make sidewalk snow removal a municipal service (scroll down for link). Currently the city only clears roadways. To call the city out on this disparity BSC is calling on residents to clear poorly cleared sidewalks & bus stops. 1/
First, here is the link for the #walkablewinters campaign followed by before/after photos from two days of shoveling. https://www.betterstreetschicago.org/walkable-winters #chicago 2/
One of the co-organizers @itskylelucas at the now fully cleared @cta Broadway 36 bus stop by the #Uptown Target. The new gap should now be wide enough for wheelchair users ramp access to the bus. @JamesCappleman @UptownUprising @uptownchamber #walkablewinters 3/
This is the NW corner of Broadway and Argyle. This took about 30 minutes to clear. This before photo (left) shows the narrow path for pedestrians and the 3’ deep pile of snow. Notice how clear the roads are in contrast. @48Ward @48thNeighbors @edgechamber. #walkablewinters 4/
And here is the @cta 36 bus stop at the same corner of Broadway & Argyle. The CTA does not take responsibility for clearing sidewalks at bus stop. The path was in totally too narrow for the ramp making it ADA inaccessible. @48Ward @48thNeighbors @AccessLiving #walkablewinters 5/
This is clearly a @cta responsibility however. This is below the Argyle Red Line stop. The north sidewalk was only partially cleared and was plowed in at the alley making it difficult to traverse if you have limited mobility. #walkablewinters 6/
This is along Argyle St (I think at Winthrop). More than anything this shows the scale of these mounds and the tiny paths for pedestrians. A wheel chair user would never make it through this. This is what happens
w/o a clear plan for snow removal. 7/
w/o a clear plan for snow removal. 7/
I love this one! The tiny path shoveled for pedestrians totally missed the ADA crosswalk. This is what happens when we rely on private property owners especially those who have no incentive to do more than the absolute bare minimum. Or less. 8/
This is the difference between what the city and @cta things counts as snow removal (left) and what proper snow removal looks like. Once again the city leaves bus stops inaccessible in winter. The ADA ramps could never have opened how it was. @AccessLiving 9/
Last one! I just like the car in the background is a 4x4. Roads are cleared for drivers like theyre fragile creatures although most people now drive 4x4. Ive gotten tinier vehicles than this thru truly unplowed roads in northern Wisconsin. @TheWarOnCars thoughts? @chi_streets 10/
