My son asked me why people think my tweets have value and why some people find me inspirational. He meant no harm in the question. I mean, I ask that question too.
I explained to him for 30 minutes about lack representation of trans people, fat people, fat trans people and how the fat trans community faces medical gatekeeping for lifesaving surgeries and treatments.
Then I went on to how difficult it is for fat trans people in our own trans community with all the internalized western beauty standards that a lot of trans people haven't confronted in themselves (or care to in some cases)
and how difficult that makes it for fat trans people to accept themselves and feel good about their transitions.
After my son commented about being fat not being something he would consider part of your identity I went on to explain
how finances, mental health, medical conditions could prevent someone from losing weight or present heavy barriers to weight management. As well as how capitalism drains the workers so not having time and energy for self care can be a factor too.
Then I went on to visibility and bullying online and how trans voices are harder to find because just existing online and being out makes you a target, and if you're fat, you're an even bigger target.
I think he may have regretted asking, but I hope he understands better now how a fat trans shit poster seems to inspire people for some reason and has value.
