Battle of Thermopylae – 480 BC

Not quite 300 Spartans but 7000 Greeks defended the Hot Gates of Thermopylae from an enormous Persian army.

They bought enough time for the main Greek forces to retreat and drive the Persians out of Europe.
Battle of Gaugamela – 331 BC

In an unknown continent and outnumbered, Alexander the Great won the battle by charging his cavalry directly towards the Persian King Darius.

As Darius fled, the rest of his army dissolved with him, leading to Alexanders conquest of Persia.
Battle of Agincourt - 1415

Cut off and outnumbered the retreating Henry V of England defeated a greater French army as the English longbowmen and their tactics decimated the French mounted knights.

This signalled the beginning of the end of the knight on the battlefield.
Battle of Okehazama - 1560

Oda Nobunaga with a force of 2- 3,000 defeated a force around 10 times the size commanded by Magawa Yoshimoto.

Not many records of this battle survive but Yoshimoto was killed, his men fled, and this became a key moment in Japanese history.
Siege of Bastogne – Dec 1944

Surrounded, outgunned, and without winter clothing the US 101st Airborne and 7th Armoured divisions held off repeated German attacks.

They ensured that the allies won The Battle of the Bulge and ended the Germans capability to go the offensive.

War should only be used a last resort, but we can celebrate and learn from the extraordinary feats of bravery, heroism and leadership that have been displayed throughout history.
