have you ever seen this underexposed low quality photograph placed along statements like "modern art sucks" or whatever? have you noticed how no one ever says the title of the work?
because if you told everyone that it was "Abstract Painting (1963)" by Ad Reinhardt, they could look into it and find the magnificent technical execution hidden within. the subtly differing hues that almost seem to shimmer when viewed in person https://www.moma.org/collection/works/78976
Ad Reinhardt was one in a line of deeply technically proficient artists in the "Hard Edge Abstraction" movement, including Ellsworth Kelly and Frank Stella. Artists who were adept at the flat application of color & seemingly effortless grasp of composition.
so like, the next time you see an out of context jpeg used as proof that art has gone downhill without so much as giving a name to the piece, be skeptical. u might just learn something
