This paragraph is key to Ms Smith’s argument, saying that UNCLOS would give an independent Alberta *more* leverage to build a pipeline than it has as a province within Canada. It should have been obvious to people at @calgaryherald if not Ms Smith herself that this is wrong.

The paragraph includes a helpful link to the relevant article in UNCLOS. I’ve included a screenshot here of what you get when you click on the link.

Alert readers might look at paragraph 2 of Article 124:

“Land-locked States and transit States MAY, BY AGREEMENT BETWEEN THEM, include as means of transport *pipelines* and gas lines...”

[emphasis added]

You would think that — just perhaps — an editor at @calgaryherald if not Ms Smith herself would take a moment to read what comes up when you click on the hyperlink that Ms Smith herself included in her article.

5/
And perhaps — just perhaps — that @calgaryherald editor, if not Ms Smith herself, would wonder if that provision actually does invalidate her entire thesis. SPOILER ALERT: It does (long explanation embedded below).

Now, I don’t know what you were taught in school, but I learned well before high school that if your essay depends on some source that you are going to cite, you are going to get a failing grade if your source clearly says the exact opposite of what you claim it does.

7/
Do better, @calgaryherald. You were given all the tools you needed to realize that Ms Smith’s column was fundamentally wrong. But you published it anyway. At least pretend that you have journalistic standards.
