Unemployment, a lack of affordable housing, and pandemic mismanagement have exacerbated the housing crisis in the US, causing women, especially women of color to become increasingly homeless and housing-insecure. That’s why all over the country, women are fighting back!
Before the pandemic Black renters were evicted at nearly twice the rate of white renters. Today, 30% of Black women are behind on rent. Black and Latina women work in the hardest-hit sectors of the pandemic, and are experiencing the highest levels of unemployment.
Last weekend, actions demanding the cancelation of rents and mortgages took place in over 30 cities. The nationwide demand is a response to the US government’s absolute neglect of working class people--and the movement is growing!
At a Denver demo Moira Cassados Cassidy said “If you are struggling to pay rent, if you are struggling to pay for diapers or food or daycare, if you are going into a job that makes you feel unsafe because you have no other choice–-then we’re together and I’m fighting with you..."
