Another thought about Christopher Plummer: in the 80s and 90s he was in the wilderness of bad tv, memorably on a CTV action series called COUNTERSTRIKE, getting paid. The first inkling I had of The Return of God Plummer was his amazing bit part in MALCOLM X as a vexed priest
Plummer hated hated hated The Sound Of Music and I heard stories of him calling it “The Sound Of Mucous” and that he resented it when fans asked him about it, but seemingly came to terms with his association with it in his final years.
But when I heard that Michael Mann was casting him as Mike Wallace in THE INSIDER I got very excited and he hits that part out of the park. Perfect balance of pompousness, excellence, schtick and protectiveness. Should have won Oscar; wasn’t even nominated
Plummer deserved his Oscar for BEGINNERS. I was raised by a gay father; his performance rang true as a man coming to terms with himself as an older man. I recognized it deeply. And he was terrific in his last minute casting as Getty in ALL THE MONEY, deservedly nominated again
No salute to Tha God Christopher Plummer would be complete without a shout-out to his performance in the Italian rip-off of Star Wars, the amazing Star Crash (1978). He absolutely owns in it even though he clearly did it for the money
