[thread] The science says it’s safe to reopen? Really?
There’s not a thing called “The science.” Scientific studies look at very specific questions. Ignoring certain questions and certain studies, while endlessly repeating others, does not prove your proposition or convince us.

We are negotiating over dozens of serious issues involving opening a major urban school district during a deadly pandemic. We are not negotiating over a single decision that is addressed by a simple study like ‘does mask wearing reduce the spread of Covid?’
There ARE studies that show that mitigation strategies are important. We’ve agreed to these points in negotiations because we are convinced by those studies. But what study tells us what happens if these protocols aren’t followed in a district as large and unequal as Chicago?
Another example—what health condition would warrant closing the schools again? District’s position is ‘outbreaks in half the schools.’ What scientific study says that? Show me that study. There’s plenty of scientific reasons to close schools during a surge like March or Oct/Nov.
Where’s the study that compares the rate of Covid among elementary teachers in NYC, who are in person, against HS teachers in NYC, who are remote? Oh, it shows that elementary teachers have much higher rates.
