Been thinking about some of the lessons my dad taught me about business.
He grew multiple companies to 7-8 figures. Saw him go from rags to riches, back to rags and riches again.
Always wished he would have written a book, but unfortunately it wasn’t in the cards.

Here’s one..
When you’re broke, money is everything.
When you have money, it’s nothing.
One day you’re writing a cheque for $300.
Then you’re writing one for $30,000.
And then $300,000.
The only difference is in your head. It’s just numbers.

Another funny story.
When dad first met his wife, she was big into crystals and woo woo stuff.
She invited him to come meet her friends.
The convo turned to getting customers for their energy healing businesses...

One girl suggested they all go to the 4 highest points on a full moon to channel the universe to deliver them customers.
(You can’t make this shit up lol).
My dad was like, have you ever thought about putting up flyers? Talking to ppl?
They looked at him like he had 3 heads.

One girl actually did it and the other 3 tried to use crystals and stuff.

My dad was street smart. Grew up quick
His early friends and mentors were all criminals.
He always told me when he got into the business world, that business people are 10x shadier than criminals.
If you rip someone off on the street, you’re dead.
Trust is the real currency.

Quick rags to riches story.
My dad and his wife lost everything in 2008.
He declared bankruptcy. They were living off of Kraft dinner.
His wife became a travel agent and he found a job selling used cars.
One day his wife said, I think I could run a better agency than my boss

My dad said really? Okay.
They put out an ad saying we are hiring travel agents and got 700 replies.
“Oh shit, I think we might be on to something.”
Within 2 years, they built a business of over 200 agents, selling 10 million+ in travel.

I saw my dad chase money his entire life.
It cost him his health. He died last year at 63.
He always told me It’s important to make a living, but having a family is what life is really all about.

Dads first sales job was selling food door to door.
Within 6 months they promoted him to manager.
And soon after that, they’d send him across Canada to help out the offices that were slacking on sales.
They always had one thing in common...

The managers of the offices which were doing bad,
They all had messy desks and messy cars.
Probably messy homes too.
And because of it, their head was a mess.
The 1st thing he’d get them to do was clean their act up.
Sales started picking up naturally.

When he found a winning formula in business, he moved super fast to repeat and scale it.
You have to.
He’d say, typically you have about a 2 year window before everyone copies you in the market.
I’d say it’s much shorter than 2 years now.

I used to ask him for advice a lot when I first started selling.
He trained hundreds of people over the years.
He said, “your biggest asset in sales is your personality and sense of humour. If you get people to laugh and open up to you it’s 1000 times easier than pitching.”

When he sold food door to door, his company taught these weird canned pitches.
He always outsold everyone in the office, because he’d just knock on doors and say, “do you like good food?”
Who is going to say no to that lol.
